The history of the compact SUV is the history of the RAV4. When Toyota introduced the RAV4, drivers here in Westchester were just beginning to see that SUVs were not just for folks who needed one for a trade or camping. With more ground clearance and a roomier interior than most compact sedans, a compact SUV provides drivers with a more desirable model. At the same time, compact SUVs like the RAV4 provide the kind of fuel economy that most drivers desire when they are considering a compact vehicle.

The name "RAV4" stands for "recreational active vehicle with four-wheel drive." Initially, this was partially true as the first-generation RAV4 featured available four-wheel drive, although most models had front-wheel drive. In addition, the first-generation models offered drivers a choice of four doors with five seats or two doors with four seats. A short-lived convertible edition was added in time for the 1998 model year. The RAV4 was also revolutionary as its unibody design was in stark contrast to most other SUVs, which were body-on-frame, with the automaker often using a pickup truck frame. Aside from a rugged design and a fuel-efficient I-4 gas engine, the first generation also had style to burn with a full-size spare tire mounted on a swinging tailgate.

With the success of the first generation, Toyota introduced an updated RAV4 in time for the 2001 model year. Gone were the two-door and convertible models and the available four-wheel drive. In addition, the Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver assistance tech and Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system became standard on all trim levels of the RAV4. Finally, the fifth generation saw the RAV4 living up to its original name with an available TRD Off-Road variant, giving drivers the trail running capabilities they desired.
